Dreams, bullpen stressing me out

Last night I dreamed I was sent out to Turner Field in the middle of a Braves game, having seen not one minute of spring training and told to come up with something to write, ready to turn in at the end of the game.

Oy.

I used to have the old recurring stress-out dream in my beat-writing days. But now? Here I am the back-up beat writer in the middle of January. I'm dreaming this the night before I'm supposed to write one lousy fill-in blog for DOB?

Such high standards you see, for the Braves/Man in Black. Or so sayeth my subconscious.

Let me back up for a second. For those not reading carefully it's CARROLL again - hey! Wassup? Long time! - and I'm feeling a little out of it after submersing myself in hockey (hockey?) and a little Hawks and Falcons for the last three months.

XOI vs. Oil and SPX

Crude oil's fundamentals are extraordinarily bullish. Global demand for oil is growing relentlessly, and most consumers have little choice but to pay virtually any price for this critical fuel. Meanwhile global production growth is slowing as old oilfields deplete and major new finds become exceedingly rare.

This structural deficit has driven oil prices to record highs, leading to fortunes earned by the companies that produce this scarce and valuable commodity. Investors and speculators have naturally migrated into oil stocks to ride this secular trend. But lately owning the oil stocks has been an exercise in frustration.

On January 2nd, oil surged 3.4% to a record $99 per barrel. Yet the oil stocks seemed to ignore this driver of their profits as the flagship XOI oil-stock index lethargically hiccupped 0.2% higher.

AIRSHOW-Honeywell sees Asia aerospace sales up 10pct in '08

Despite fears of a global downturn amidst a slowing U.S. economy and a growing credit crisis, business activity globally has not been affected, a senior executive from the company said.

"It's mainly showing up as just a lot of worry and concerns. But we're not seeing it in the data, we're not seeing it in orders and in business activities," said Mark Howes, President of Honeywell Aerospace Asia Pacific.

Howes said Honeywell's aerospace division saw about $900 million in sales in 2007, and expects this to grow to $1 billion this year as airlines receive record number of aircrafts from manufacturers such as Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research), Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) and Bombardier (BBDb.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) in 2008.

Howes, who is attending the Singapore Airshow being held this week, said the U.S.

JAMIE SAMUELSEN'S BLOG: The Lions shouldn't be interested in Al Wilson

Im not all that interested in a player that missed an entire season with a neck injury. Its not that Wilson cant come back. Maybe he can. Maybe he can be one hundred percent by training camp. But where the Lions are now, Im not willing to take the chance.

Doesnt it seem like its always a bunch of question marks? Why cant we ever get an exclamation point? A dominant pass-rusher or a stud offensive lineman. Instead its always a guy coming off injury or a guy playing out of position or a guy who has always been a back-up finally getting his starting shot in Detroit.

How many absolute known commodities are there on this team right now? Five or six? And maybe thats being generous. Why then would you want to spend money on another unknown commodity just to add to the mix? The Lions will have to take some chances to get this thing headed in the right direction, but this isnt one of them.
